Social Media – good marketing or waste of time?

In comparison to our blog last week about social media, we decided to be fair and take a look at the other side to the argument.  Is it all a waste of time or can you actually make money on the time you spend asking people to like you and following people in hopes they will follow you?

According to ProBlogger statistics, 25% of Twitter users have no followers, 40% don’t publish anything, and 20% of users produce 80% of the content.  These are not strong numbers, considering the dollar amounts businesses spend on trying to maintain a social marketing strategy.

You also need to consider that 200 million people have Twitter accounts and how many of those are potential customers.  According to the same statistics, 42% use Twitter as the best way to learn about products and services, 41% to provide opinions about products and services, and 31% to ask opinions about products and services.

What conclusions can we draw in combining last week’s stats with this week’s stats?

The business world definitely has strong opinions about social media and what it can or may not be able to do for the bottom line.  Truthfully, it can have mixed results – we’ve seen clients receive great feedback from their online marketing strategies, and we’ve seen clients that haven’t received any traffic.

How do you win the battle?

The most important thing is to make sure your strategy is indeed that – a strategy.  Be focused in your desired outcomes for your campaign – don’t give yourself an immeasurable goal: gaining more customers isn’t measurable, obtaining 30 new followers per month is.

Next, make sure your online strategy mirrors your traditional marketing strategy – are both campaigns saying the same thing?  How can you get them to intermingle and gain you more followers for all platforms?  Most importantly, how can you then lead your new “like” or “follower” to a call to action, your website to purchase?

E2 Marketing works with clients every day to strengthen strategies, utilize current medias to target new ideas, and brand the company as a whole, not a sum of its parts.  Don’t hesitate to contact us if you need help, it’s how we help you tell the world.
